Why is Joe sloppy?

Apparently ‘sloppy joe’ is a well-known dish, popular amongst kids. I am no kid but it has quickly become popular with me because it makes perfect weeknight meal.

It may not look very pretty (the name may be the clue here!) but it’s damn tasty! And even though the ingredients list is quite long, don’t let it deter you – you pretty much throw all of them in together!!

Turkey Sloppy Joe

  • 1 can tomatos
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp chilli powder (or less if you don’t want it too hot)
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • pinch of cayenne pepper

  • olive oil
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 500g turkey mince
  • 2 carrots (grated)
  • 1/3 cup corn
  • burger buns/tortilla wraps

How to do it

  1. Make tomato sauce: add all the ingredients into a blender, whizz up until smooth and that’s your sauce ready
  2. Heat up some olive oil in the fan, fry onion and garlic for 2 minutes, then add turkey and fry until browned, around 5 minutes
  3. Add grated carrot and fry further 2 minutes
  4. Add sauce, cook until some of the liquid has evaporated and sauce become thicker, around 10 minutes
  5. Add corn, cook further 5 minuets or until you are happy with the consistency
  6. Serve in the warmed up burger buns or tortilla wraps, you can serve it with sour cream or guacamole of you wish!
